What is Jesus doing right now?

For Meditation (Elisabeth Hayes)

We’re continuing our summer sermon series this week with another big kid question: “What is Jesus doing right now?”

We talk often about what Jesus has done—how he lived, died, and rose again—but we don’t always talk about what Jesus is doing now. Kids especially want to know: If Jesus is alive, where is he? What’s he doing? Is he still human? Does he eat, sleep, have a job, or play with a pet?

These may sound like simple or even silly questions, but they actually get to the heart of some of the most profound truths of our faith. Jesus didn’t just disappear after Easter—he ascended, is exalted at the right hand of God, and is actively reigning, interceding, and is preparing a place for us even now. The same Jesus who once walked the dusty roads of Galilee is still very much alive—with a real, resurrected body—and is working right now for our good and for the renewal of all creation.

In preparation for worship this week, read Hebrews 1:1–4 and Luke 24:36–43.

At the dinner table or in your Parish Group, invite kids to share their thoughts: What do you think Jesus looks like now? What do you think he does all day?

And reflect yourself:

  1. When you think about Jesus right now, do you picture him as distant or present? What might help you imagine him more vividly and personally?

  2. What difference does it make in your daily life to know that Jesus is praying for you and ruling with love—even when you can’t see it?

  3. In what areas of your life do you most need to be reminded that Jesus is alive, involved, and trustworthy? How might you invite him into those places this week?

Hebrews 1:1–4

In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
