  • Smart Giving from Your IRA

When you give to Third Church through your IRA, it is possible to support Third and save on taxes.

A Special Opportunity for Those 70½ Years Old And Older

If you are 70 ½ or older, you can give any amount (up to a maximum of $100,000) per year from your IRA directly to a qualified charitable organization such as Third Church without having to pay income taxes on the distribution. Gifts of any value $100,000 or less are eligible for this benefit. This popular gift option is commonly called the IRA charitable rollover, but you may also see it referred to as a qualified charitable distribution, or QCD for short.

    Why Consider This Gift?

    • Your gift will support Third Church’s mission.

    • The amount you give directly from your IRA to Third can be used to satisfy all or part of any required minimum distribution (RMD) for that IRA.

    • You pay no income taxes on the gift. The transfer generates neither taxable income nor a tax deduction, so you benefit even if you do not itemize your deductions.

    • Since giving directly from your IRA to Third doesn’t count as income, it can reduce your annual income level if you are subject to required minimum distributions. This may help lower your Medicare premiums and decrease the amount of Social Security that is subject to tax.

For Those 59½ Years Old or Older

If you are at least 59½ years old, you can take a distribution from your IRA without penalty, and then make a gift to Third.. If you itemize deductions on your tax return, you can take a charitable deduction for the amount of your gift.

    At Any Age

No matter your age, you can designate Third Church as the beneficiary of all or a percentage of your IRA and it will pass to us tax-free after your lifetime. It’s simple, just requiring that you contact your IRA administrator for a change-of-beneficiary form or download a form from your provider’s website.

Tip: It is critical to let us know of your gift because many popular retirement plan administrators assume no obligation to notify a charitable organization of your designation. The administrator also will not monitor whether your gift designations are followed. We would love to talk to you about your intentions to ensure that they are followed. We would also like to thank you for your generosity.

    Next Steps

    1. Contact LeAnne Lane, Finance Accountant, at (804) 282-4645 or finance@thirdrva.org to discuss using your IRA to support Third Church.

    2. Seek the advice of your financial or legal advisor.

    3. To include Third Church in your plans, please use our legal name and federal tax ID. Please let us know of your gift so we may ensure your goals are honored (many retirement providers assume no responsibility for letting charitable organizations know of your intentions).

      Legal name: Third Church, Inc.
Legal address: 500 Forest Avenue, Richmond, VA 23229
      Federal tax ID number: 44-4434869

  • You may consider naming Third Church as a beneficiary in your will or trust to create a legacy gift. This type of donation to Third Church in your will or living trust helps ensure that our mission continues for years to come.

In as little as one sentence, you can complete your gift.

Sample: "I give to Third Church, Inc, a nonprofit corporation currently located at 500 Forest Avenue, Richmond VA 23229, or its successor thereto, _________ [written amount or percentage of the estate or description of property] for its unrestricted charitable use and purpose."

    Next Steps

  • Text-to-give is a quick and easy way to support the work of Third. After a one-time setup, you can give as you feel led whenever and wherever you may be with a simple text.

Note that the first time you give by text, you will have to register an account to give via text. Even if you’ve already given online before, the text portal is different and will require you to register an account the first time. After that, you’re good to go— all you have to do is text a figure (ex. 50, not $50) to that number and your gift will be submitted. Item description

  • Make A Gift In A Few Easy Steps

Not everyone wants to commit to making a gift in their will or estate. Some prefer the increased flexibility that a beneficiary designation provides by using:

    • IRAs and qualified retirement plans (e.g. 401(k), 403(b), 401(a), 457)

    • Brokerage investment accounts by adding a Transfer on Death designation

    • Life insurance policies

    • Donor advised funds

    • Commercial annuities

    • Bank Accounts and Certificates of Deposit

It is very simple to name Third Church as a beneficiary. Start by requesting a change-of-beneficiary form from your policy administrator or download the form from your provider's website. Make your desired changes and return the form to establish your gift.

    Next Steps

    1. Contact the administrator of your retirement plan, insurance policy or bank account for a change-of-beneficiary form, or simply download a form from your provider's website.

    2. Decide what percentage (1 to 100) or amount you would like Third Church to receive and name us, along with the percentage or amount you chose, on the beneficiary form. Return the completed form.

    3. Contact LeAnne Lane, Finance Accountant, at (804) 282-4645 or finance@thirdrva.org to let us know your goals for the gift so we can ensure it is used as you intend.

      Legal name: Third Church, Inc.
Address: 500 Forest Avenue, Richmond, VA 23229
      Federal tax ID number: 44-4434869

  • Honor Someone Special with A Gift in their Name

A memorial or tribute gift is a meaningful way to honor a loved one or celebrate a special occasion, such as a birthday, while supporting Third Church.

    Next Steps

    1. Contact LeAnne Lane, Finance Accountant, at (804) 282-4645 or finance@thirdrva.org for additional information on creating a memorial gift to support Third Church.

    2. Seek the advice of your financial or legal advisor.

    3. If you make a memorial gift to Third Church through your estate, please use our legal name and federal tax ID.

      Legal name: Third Church, Inc.
Address: 500 Forest Avenue, Richmond, VA 23229
      Federal tax ID number: 44-4434869

All memorial gifts will go to Third Church’s endowment fund unless otherwise designated. Thank you for helping Third continue its mission for many years to come.

Giving of our time, talent, and treasure is an act of worship.

We believe the local church is one of God’s great vessels of hope for the world. Through the local church, the gospel is proclaimed, community is formed, individuals grow and the kingdom is embodied and sent out into the world.

As a church community, we are—and have been historically—deeply committed to both local and global mission, giving 25% of our annual budget to outreach and service. To see all of the mission partners we support through your generosity, visit our Missions page.

Refugee Support

In 2022, we have been supporting two families, one from Afghanistan and one from Russia/Ukraine.

In each case, we support our families though finding donations for clothing, furniture, and food; submitting work permit applications; arranging and accompanying them to medical and dental appointments; obtaining medical insurance and other government based benefits. We also help to enroll the children in school, assist them in preparing for driver’s licenses tests, collecting donations for all the items needed to furnish a home and a host of other vital needs.
