Psalm 134: The Benediction Song

For Meditation

As we come to Psalm 134 we come to the final Psalm of Ascent, the psalm that would be the equivalent of the benediction in our worship services. And in these closing words we’re given marching orders as we head out again on our journey of faith. These orders are to praise the Lord and to be blessed by God.

But what does that look like in these difficult times? As each of us has likely found ourselves in times of struggle and difficulty it’s common not to feel like praising God because we’re not seeing his blessings. Psalm 134 reorients us to think differently about praise and blessing. This Psalm tells us to praise God unceasingly and even in the midst of difficult situations because of the blessing of faith by grace we’ve received from God.

And as God always does, the blessing is not meant just for us, but to be shared with others. God has blessed us through Jesus and in response we praise him and through our praise others may come to know God’s blessing with us.

Psalm 134

1 Praise the Lord, all you servants of the Lord
who minister by night in the house of the Lord.
2 Lift up your hands in the sanctuary
and praise the Lord.

3 May the Lord bless you from Zion,
he who is the Maker of heaven and earth.
