The Shape of Worship 7: Scripture and Preaching

For Meditation

Today, fewer and fewer people accept that there are authoritative voices that can make statements to guide, challenge and direct their lives; yet God’s word stands alone as the one True authority to do exactly those things.  When we read scripture aloud together and hear it proclaimed in the sermon, God can and does speak Truth into our lives.  As we hear his Truth we will be guided by it, challenged by it, and it will reveal who we truly are as well as revealing who God truly is.

Scripture and preaching in worship is God’s word for God’s people, and when we gather together each Sunday we can expect to hear God speak to us in and through his living Word.  As we hear God’s word proclaimed in Jesus we must be and will be moved to obedience. And as we obey we will keep to the path God has set before us, being formed more and more into the image of Christ.

Psalm 119:9-16, ESV

9 How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word.

10 With my whole heart I seek you; let me not wander from your commandments!

11 I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.

12 Blessed are you, O Lord; teach me your statutes!

13 With my lips I declare all the rules of your mouth.

14 In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.

15 I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways.

16 I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.

2 Timothy 3:14-17, NIV

14 But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, 15 and how from infancy you have known the Holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 16 All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.

Hebrews 4: 12-13, NIV

12 For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. 13 Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.
