Proposed Bylaw Changes: From Working Group #2

We encourage you to attend a congregational meeting on Sunday, February 26 (at 12:30 p.m.) to approve proposed changes to Third's By-Laws and to hear an update on our Strategic Planning Process.

The Board of Directors of Third Church Inc. moves that the members of Third Church, Inc. approve and adopt the attached proposed Amended and Restated Constitution and Bylaws of Third Church Inc. at a congregational meeting on Sunday, February 26 at 12:30, in the Sanctuary. 

The proposed amendments to the Bylaws, as reflected in the attached Amended and Restated Constitution and Bylaws (“Proposed Bylaws”), are presented to Third’s members after months of work to incorporate necessary changes.  It has been approved by Strategic Planning Working Group 2 and approved by Third’s Session acting as the Board of Directors of Third Church, Inc.  Assistance was also provided by Third’s corporate legal counsel and an informal working group of member lawyers.

Overview of the Amendments

Changes in our current Bylaws are required in order to institute the new, Session-approved structure for elders.  As we address making these changes, several other changes have been included.  There are three main areas of revision:

  • Session Structure – Creation of two categories of elder – Shepherding and Governing; defining their roles, nomination and election processes, and terms of office.  These revisions constitute most of the amendments to the Bylaws.
  • Addressing Religious Freedom Issues – To provide a solid foundation in our constitutional documents for clearly establishing our approach to church discipline, resolution of disputes, employment matters, and the use of church property that will provide increased legal protection.
  • Editorial and Grammatical – Changing capitalization, titles, and phrasing.
