The Hicks’ goal in Japan is to glorify God by helping to plant gospel-centered, mission-focused, multiplying churches in partnership with existing local Japanese churches among the 127 million Japanese, who number less than 1% Christian. Having arrived in Japan in October 2016, they are beginning their second year on the Pioneers Launch Team, whose purpose is to provide a 2-year preparation phase for new missionaries to learn the Japanese language and culture, and ministry skills and strategies in a Japanese context.
Jonathan is making good progress in the Japanese language (though the boys are already surpassing him) as well as nding opportunities to share about Christ at his language school and with Japanese language partners. Mika is Japanese, and God is opening doors for relationships and sharing the gospel with other mothers at the boys’ kindergarten. Mika also helps out occasionally with translation from English to Japanese at the bilingual church they attend. Since Mika is from a Buddhist/Shinto background, God also gives her opportunities to share with other Japanese how she came from this common system of belief into a relationship with Christ.
In 2018, the Hicks will be praying earnestly about the next steps for them in Japan as they complete the Launch process and look to become more directly involved in ministry in 2019.
