What to Expect
Visiting a new church can be a little uncomfortable as you figure out where to go and what's going on. Everything that happens at Third’s worship services is guided by our Worship Values, but here are a few things to look for when you attend any of the three Sunday worship services at Third Church.
Participation. You'll find a community that loves singing and praising God together, and that doesn’t ask our leaders to put on a performance for us. We expect excellence in all aspects of music and liturgy, but because we value the participation of our congregation (in addition to our professional staff) in all aspects of worship, you won't feel like you're at a concert, either classical or rock. Rather, we want you to feel connected to those around you and to God, as the Spirit empowers each of us–together–to bring our whole selves into His holy presence.
All ages. We have a full program of child-care and discipleship for all ages, which you can explore by clicking the links above. But all of our services are intergenerational and we strongly encourage children to join their families in worship from an early age. So expect to find some kids doing a little wiggling and talking in our midst during the worship services. Actually, expect some teenagers and adults to do some fidgeting, too, and feel free to move around if you need to. If your child has a meltdown and needs some space, there's a Wiggle Room (Room 132) where the services are streamed live so you can hear the sermon while you nurse or play with your baby/toddler. But we want kids to learn about worship by participating in it, and don’t frown upon kids as “distractions” in our midst. Room 132 is located off the Student Ministry area, near the women's restrooms.
Welcome. Before and after each service (as well as during the greeting near the beginning of each service) there are times to connect with those around you, and we'd love the chance to welcome you and hear your story. If you'd like to lay low and just check things out, we still encourage you to put down some contact info in the Friendship Pads that get passed during the service. We'll follow up with you in whatever way makes you comfortable: an e-mail, a phone call, or a visit. But if you're ready to find out more and let us get to know you, just strike up a conversation with "I'm new to Third" and it's a safe bet you'll get invited out to lunch.
The Third Church Sanctuary is located at 600 Forest Avenue in the West End of Richmond (referred to as Henrico, Virginia, by the post office and mapping services). We're between Patterson Avenue and River Road, across the street from Tuckahoe Elementary School.
